Almost on a daily basis we overlook ways that we can participate in healing our planet. The challenge, more often than not, is that we suffer from information overload. Additionally, we are so often fed misinformation and with the advent of AI, far too often we do not know what to believe.
In cases like this, I always revert back to the basics of time-proven formulas for success. But that is the exact opposite of what most people do because we have now been condition to always seek out novelty. Social media of course does not help with this.
That said, let’s continue our discussion on how to transition to a plant-based diet. So join me for Episode 275.
Welcome back everyone to the Adventures in Sustainable Living Podcast. This is your host Patrick and this is E275 How to Transition to a Plant Based Diet Part Two.
Now, I want to start this episode with a simple question that may at first seem contradictory. Did it ever occur to you that making your life more convenient may in fact be making it more difficult.
As consumers, we are increasingly willing to prioritize convenience over quality, with 97% of shoppers abandoning purchases due to inconvenience and many are paying premiums for services such as Amazon Prime and food delivery services. Unfortunately, technology and convenience culture have established immediate access as a standard expectation, creating a social norm where speed equates to success.
On the other side of the coin, our modern conveniences may simplify daily tasks, contemporary "hyper-convenience" is increasingly making lives more difficult by increasing stress, reducing personal resilience, and impairing our mental health.
On-going ease and convenience eliminates any challenges to accomplishing daily tasks, leading to fragility and an inability to tolerate discomfort or delay or any sort. Additionally, the constant outsourcing of any effort removes the sense of accomplishment derived from overcoming obstacles, leading to feelings of emptiness and dissatisfaction. On top of that, digital convenience replaces face-to-face interaction, exacerbating loneliness and weakening any sense of community.
As far as our diets are concerned, a convenience-based diet, heavily reliant on processed foods, fast food, and pre-packaged meals, is strongly linked to a range of adverse health conditions due to high levels of saturated fats, sodium, added sugars, and calories, while being deficient in essential nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Regular consumption of these foods also significantly increases the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and stroke. In addition, this type of diet promotes low grade inflammation and oxidative stress, which are underlying factors in various chronic diseases, including certain cancers and kidney disease.
As you can see our constant crave for convenience does make our lives more difficult simply because of the ripple affect on so many other areas in our lives. But, as I have said so many times before, there is so much that we can choose to do about this, one of which is changing our diets. In particular, focusing more on an plant-based diet.
In the last episode I focused much of my time on the health benefits of a plant based diet. In this episode I am going to discuss how a plant-based diet reduces our environmental impact as well as how this diet is a much more efficient use of our resources.
Good News Story of the Week
Most of us likely know that environmental pressures related to human incursion is taking a devastating toll on our biodiversity. But what most people do not know is that up to 70% of our pharmaceuticals either come directly from nature or have been inspired by a product of nature. This of course adds yet another reason as to why we should avidly work to preserve our natural environment.
Most of the chronic diseases that result in death in developed countries is the result of poor diet and lack of exercise. In the United States, cancer is the second leading cause of death, with heart disease being the first.
But the good news is that Japanese scientists have discovered a naturally-occurring bacteria in a frog species with remarkably-potent anticancer activity—in fact, it destroyed cancer tumors in one dose.
A team at Japan’s Advanced Institute of Science and Technology discovered that a natural bacteria from the intestines of a Japanese tree frog (Ewingella americana) achieved a 100% tumor elimination rate in mice with just a single intravenous.
Not only did the gut bacteria kill the cancer cells, it also engaged the animal’s immune system for “comprehensive tumor destruction”.
Numerous strains of bacteria have already been isolated and according to the authors of the research, “These findings suggest that gut microbiomes of lower vertebrates harbor numerous uncharacterized bacterial species with exceptional therapeutic potential.”
And I think this demonstrates yet another reason why we should be working to maintain and protect our biodiversity. The natural world obviously has numerous yet undiscovered benefits to humanity.
Now, let’s move on to talking about how a plant based diet reduces our environmental impact and in addition to that is a more efficient use of our resources.
How a Plant-Based Diet Reduces Our Environmental Impact
Our food production by far has more of an environmental impact that any other thing that we do as humans. Animal agriculture generally requires significantly more resources to plant-based food production.
By eating more plants we can:
🌱 Lower greenhouse gas emissions
🌱 Reduced land use
🌱 Lower water consumption
🌱 Reduce deforestation
🌱 Reduce pollution from livestock operations
🌱 Increased biodiversity protection
The food choices we make every day have a significant impact on the environment. A plant-based diet generally requires fewer natural resources and produces less pollution than a diet high in animal products. While no food system is completely impact-free, shifting toward more plant foods is one of the most effective ways individuals can reduce their environmental footprint and shift toward a more sustainable lifestyle.
1. Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Food production contributes a substantial share of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Animal agriculture produces emissions through:
🐄 Methane from livestock digestion
🌾 Feed crop production
🚜 Farm equipment and transportation
💩 Manure management
🌳 Land clearing for grazing and feed production
Methane is particularly important because it traps much more heat than carbon dioxide over the short term.
Plant foods generally produce fewer emissions per calorie and per gram of protein than most animal products.
Why It Matters
Our food production alone accounts for 25% to 35% of our green house gas production. A plant based diet could reduce that portion of our GHP by 70%. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions helps slow climate change and its impacts on weather, agriculture, water resources, and ecosystems.
2. Uses Less Land
Livestock production requires vast amounts of land for:
- Grazing animals
- Growing feed crops
- Supporting agricultural infrastructure
Many calories are lost when crops are fed to animals before reaching people.
Plant-based diets use land more efficiently because people consume crops directly rather than cycling them through livestock.
Let’s look at some numbers:
Approximately 36% of global grain production is used to feed livestock. Specifically, 80% of soy, 61% of corn, and 20% of wheat is used to feed livestock instead of people. In the United States, literally 70% of the grain produced is fed to livestock.
Why It Matters
Using less land can help:

🌳 Preserve wildlife habitat
🌳 Reduce deforestation
🌳 Protect biodiversity
3. Conserves Water
Most of us don’t think about the fact that our water resources are not exactly unlimited. Agriculture is one of the largest users of freshwater globally.
Animal products require water for:
💧 Growing feed crops
💧 Drinking water for animals
💧 Cleaning and processing facilities
Many plant foods require substantially less water than animal products.
Why It Matters
Water conservation becomes increasingly important as populations grow and droughts become more common in many regions. Extraction of fresh water from ground sources is becoming increasingly problematic.
4. Helps Protect Forests
Large areas of forest are cleared to:
- Create grazing land
- Grow livestock feed
- Expand agricultural production
While our forests are being destroyed we forget about the fact that this natural resource is vital for:
🌲 Carbon storage
🌲 Wildlife habitat
🌲 Soil protection
🌲 Water cycle regulation
On a global basis, only 21% of the original old growth forests remain. In the US alone, approximately 90% of the virgin forests that once covered the lower 48 states have been cleared since the 1600s. Reducing our demand for resource-intensive foods, such as animal products, can help reduce pressure on these ecosystems.
5. Protects Biodiversity
Habitat loss is one of the leading causes of species decline.
When natural ecosystems are converted into agricultural land, many species lose:
🦋 Food sources
🐦 Nesting sites
🦌 Migration corridors
🐝 Pollinator habitat
Because plant-based diets generally require less land, they can help reduce pressure on natural ecosystems. Global agricultural land use would drop by approximately 75% if the world adopted a plant based diet.
6. Reduces Pollution
Intensive livestock production can contribute to:
- Nutrient runoff into waterways
- Water contamination
- Air pollution
- Soil degradation
Excess nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, entering rivers and lakes can lead to algae blooms and oxygen depletion, harming aquatic ecosystems. There are currently 415 dead zones in our oceans around the world. In the Gulf of Mexico the dead zone covers over 4, 400 square miles.
A food system that relies more heavily on plant foods can reduce some of these environmental pressures.
7. Improves Food System Efficiency
One of the most important sustainability benefits involves resource efficiency.
Animals consume large quantities of:
🌽 Corn
🌱 Soybeans
🌾 Grains
That could otherwise be used for human consumption. Under our current agriculture system, only a portion of the calories and protein fed to livestock become food for humans. Using all of this grain to feed the human population is a far more efficient way to use our resources.
Why It Matters
Greater efficiency can improve food security while reducing environmental strain.
8. Supports Climate Resilience
Climate change is increasing risks to food systems through:
- Droughts
- Floods
- Heat waves
- Crop failures
Plant-based diets can support more resilient food systems by reducing demand for resource-intensive production and encouraging greater crop diversity.
9. Empowers Individual Action
Many environmental problems can feel overwhelming.
Dietary choices are one area where individuals have direct control every day as far as their individual action is concerned.
Each meal is an opportunity to:
🌿 Use fewer resources
🌿 Reduce your contribution to global emissions
🌿 Protect ecosystems
🌿 Support a more sustainable food system
Small changes repeated consistently over time can add up to meaningful environmental benefits.
The Big Picture
A plant-based diet reduces environmental impact by:

✅ Protecting wildlife and biodiversity
✅ Decreasing pollution
✅ Improving food system efficiency

This is one reason many sustainability experts view dietary shifts and food waste reduction as two of the most accessible and effective actions individuals can take to help create a more sustainable future. By eating more plants and wasting less food, people can reduce their environmental footprint while often improving their health at the same time.
How a Plant-Based Diet Is a Better Use of Our Resources
One of the strongest arguments for a plant-based diet is that it allows us to produce more food while using fewer resources. Every meal requires land, water, energy, labor, fertilizer, and fuel. When we eat plants directly rather than feeding crops to livestock first, those resources are used much more efficiently.
Simply put:
A plant-based diet allows more people to be fed with the same amount of land, water, and energy.
Understanding Resource Efficiency
Think of food production like a budget. Farmers have a limited amount of:
🌱 Land
💧 Water
⚡ Energy
🚜 Fuel
🌾 Crops
👩🌾 Labor
The question is:
How can we produce the most nutrition using the fewest resources?
In many cases, growing food for people directly is more efficient than growing food for animals and then consuming animal products.
1. More Efficient Use of Cropland
A significant portion of global agricultural land is used to grow feed for livestock.
Common feed crops include:
🌽 Corn
🌱 Soybeans
🌾 Wheat
🌾 Barley
When these crops are fed to animals, much of their energy is used by the animal for:
- Movement
- Body heat
- Metabolism
- Maintenance of organs
Only a fraction becomes meat, milk, or eggs.
Why It Matters
When people eat crops directly:
✅ More calories reach people
✅ More protein reaches people
✅ Less land is required
This means the same farmland can often support more human nutrition.
2. Better Use of Water
Water is one of our most valuable resources we have on the planet.
Food production requires water for:

Producing animal products generally requires water not only for the animals themselves but also for the crops grown to feed them.

Eating more plant foods can reduce pressure on freshwater supplies and help communities cope with drought and water shortages.
3. More Food from the Same Land
This means we get more bang for our buck.
Imagine two farms with the same amount of land.
Farm A grows crops that people eat directly.
Farm B grows crops to feed livestock before those livestock become food.
Farm A can often produce more edible calories and protein for people because there is no additional conversion step.
Why It Matters
As populations grow, maximizing food production from existing farmland becomes increasingly important.
4. Reduced Energy Consumption
Modern food systems require energy for:

Animal agriculture adds additional stages:

By consuming more plant foods directly, overall fertilizer demand can be reduced.

Resource efficiency and food security are closely connected.
When food production requires fewer inputs:

This is especially important as climate change, water shortages, and population growth place increasing pressure on food supplies.
7. Reduced Food System Waste
Every time food is converted from plants to animal products, some energy and nutrients are lost.
This is a natural biological process.
A plant-based diet shortens the pathway from:
Farm → Food → Person
instead of:
Farm → Feed Crop → Animal → Food → Person
Why It Matters
Shorter food chains generally use resources more efficiently.
8. Supports Long-Term Sustainability
A sustainable food system must balance:

🌱 Economic viability
🌱 Resource conservation
Plant-based diets help support all four goals by reducing the amount of land, water, and energy needed to produce the food we consume for all of the other reasons stated above.
A Simple Analogy
Imagine you have $100 to feed a community.
You could:
Option A: Use the money to buy food directly for people.
Option B: Use the money to buy feed for animals and then distribute the animal products later.
In many cases, Option A will feed more people because fewer resources are lost along the way.
The same principle applies to land, water, energy, and crops.
The Bottom Line
A plant-based diet is a better use of our resources because it:
✅ Uses less land
✅ Conserves water
✅ Requires less energy
✅ Reduces fertilizer demand
✅ Produces more food per acre
✅ Protects forests and biodiversity
✅ Improves food security
✅ Reduces waste throughout the food system
For sustainability advocates, this is one of the most compelling reasons to eat more plant-based foods. By consuming plants directly, we can obtain excellent nutrition while making more efficient use of the planet's limited resources, helping create a food system that is better equipped to support both current and future generations.
Now allow me to say once again that I have no intention of becoming a vegetarian or a vegan. But, if you consider all that I’ve said here, imagine how our planet could change if we all reduced our meat consumption by 50%. We would not need any more farm land in order to adequately feed our planet. We would preserve a significant amount of our resources. This would be one of the easiest ways for each of us to mitigate climate change. Not to mention the fact, that we have to consider how our present lifestyle will impact future generations.
In fact, the Great Law of Peace, which is the spoken constitution of the Iroquois Confederacy, is embedded with the philosophy that leaders must consider the impact of their decisions on the next seven generations.
That is exactly how we should be thinking.
